Saltwater Fly Fishing Casting Resources
THe double haul
The backcast presentation
Fly fishing in saltwater, especially in the Florida Keys can be very demanding on fly anglers. Fish here are constantly on the move and being able to get a fly in front of them when the wind if blowing 10-15mph is detrimental to getting tight.
I have looked all over the internet to find videos and information for my guests to help them get an edge on their casting ability before their trip of a lifetime. These videos have helped my guests become competent anglers, and the guests that practice their casting tend to catch more fish. There are several videos on both the double haul and the backcast presentation. Both of these casting techniques are a must if you want to catch fish in the Florida Keys. Check out all the videos, the creators all have different teaching styles to help you learn.
The Double Haul
This casting technique helps increase line speed, by hauling once on your back cast and again on your forward cast. This technique will give the angle greater casting distance and more power to cast in the wind.
In this first video presented by RIO Products, Simon teaches the double haul in an easy to understand method and does a great job of explaining the science behind the cast.
This second video presented by Orvis, is how I teach my guests to double haul. The process involves separating the forward cast and back cast by laying the line on the ground.
The third video presented by Nathaniel Linville and the Angling Co, explains the importance of the double haul and why it is required for saltwater fly fishing in the Florida Keys. He uses a similar method to learn the cast, but pay attention to his arm movements and his timing.
The backcast presentation
The backcast presentation is a must for fly fishing out of a flats boat. For a right handed angler the backcast is presented off of the right shoulder, a left handed angler on the left. Simply put, you finish or land your cast on the back cast. This allows the angler to easily fish both sides of the boat without hooking the guide or themselves.
This first video by Tom Rowland and Saltwater Experience explains the importance, and how to of the backcast presentation.
The next video presented by Orvis, explains the backcast by using your shoulder to accurately present the fly.
This Video by Nathaniel at The Angling Co, shows the cast being used in a real world flats boat situation. Again he explains how important this cast is to saltwater anglers.
